What is the UKiset?
UKiset is a computerised test used by many UK independent schools to assess international applicants. It includes:
Reasoning (Verbal, Non-Verbal, and Mathematical) – benchmarking cognitive ability against UK averages.
English (Cambridge Assessment) – assessing vocabulary, reading and listening skills aligned to CEFR levels.
Essay Writing – a hand-written response that gives schools insight into your child’s communication and structure.
Students sit the UKiset at an approved centre or online under formal invigilation. The test can only be taken once every six months, so thorough preparation matters.
When to Start UKiset Preparation
We recommend beginning 2–3 months before your child’s intended test date. Weekly lessons supported by independent practice will allow time for mock tests, review, and targeted improvement. If your child has less time, we offer accelerated programmes and intensive courses.
UKiset & Our Schools Consultancy
Our in-house schools consultancy supports families through every stage of the admissions process. From identifying schools aligned with your child’s strengths to crafting a strong application and preparing for interviews, we offer honest, expert advice tailored to international families.

Frequently Asked Questions - UKiset & Independent School Entry
Which schools use the UKiset?
Over 300 UK independent schools use UKiset as part of their admissions process. These include top boarding schools (Eton, Winchester, Wellington), all-through schools (King’s Wimbledon, St Mary’s Ascot) and Sixth Forms (Concord, Brighton College).
How many times can my child take the test?
UKiset can be taken once every six months, so it’s important to be fully prepared before the first attempt.
Is UKiset suitable for 11+, 13+ or 16+?
Yes. The test adapts to age and ability, so students aged 9 to 17 can sit the assessment. Schools interpret the results according to the entry level they’re recruiting for.
How is UKiset scored?
Results include a Stanine score (1 – 9), CEFR level for English, and a report comparing the student to UK school norms. Schools also receive the student’s written essay.
Does my child need perfect English to succeed?
No, but schools expect strong comprehension and grammar. Our English tutors are experienced in bridging curriculum gaps and building exam-level fluency for international learners.
Is UKiset used on its own or with other tests?
Some schools use it as a pre-screening tool; others combine it with their own entrance tests and interviews. We can advise on each school’s specific process.
